Teen Mentorship Project

The Teen Mentorship Project was conceived by local artist/activist Lety Garcia and sponsored by the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center and Rincon High School in Carpinteria. For 5 weeks, 9 teens met with photographer Patricia Houghton Clarke to study and practice the art of portraiture using the students’ mobile phones and Patricia’s professional gear.

Audria Culaciati, a teacher at Rincon High, said “The students are responding really well to the photography class. They’re learning—taking in information, participating in the craft of photography, discovering a new and interesting way to use their phones and to express themselves.” She added, “They’re learning to see each other in a new light, literally and metaphorically…”
